She looked over his shoulder
For vines and olive trees,
Marble well-governed cities
And ships upon untamed seas,
But there on the shining metal
His hands had put instead
An artificial wilderness
And a sky like lead.

A plain without a feature, bare and brown,
No blade of grass, no sign of neighborhood,
Nothing to eat and nowhere to sit down,
Yet, congregated on its blankness, stood
An unintelligible multitude,
A million eyes, a million boots in line,
Without expression, waiting for a sign.

On Radio Joel lately

For those who are interested, wanted to share what's been hot on my turntables (by which I mean my ipod) this week: Bon Iver (omg, amazing), The Format, Common, Josh Ritter, Masta Killa, Snow Patrol (yes, cheesy, I know), and Pale Young Gentlemen (Madison, what?). And Vampire Weekend, but they've been in the rotation non-stop for like 4 months.

What are you listing too? I'm interested.

Jason Shannon. His new album is awesome and his shows are even better. He's launching a new website this week, but you can check out his songs on his MySpace page in the meantime.

others: Arctic Monkeys, The Whitest Boy Alive....and I have to give a throwback to 311

I'm only listening to Bon Iver these days, with a side salad of PYG. And mix CDs (Coco Rosie, CeeLo, and Cougar have been big winners there). And stuff I find on FAWM. And K and I have discussed our mutual love of Mr. Ritter.

So... no help from me.

Oh wait, but this summer I was crazy into Hot Chip. Do you like them?

Well that's fucking interesting. It's weird that bagpipes are cited by people as the most annoying sound in the world, but in practice they actually sound cool (or in this case, electronic renditions of them). I had never heard of them before, but I'll keep them on the list. I dig it.

What CeeLo should one get?

I actually don't know! I just have one Cee Lo song on this rad mix my friend Lauren made. "I'll Be Around" is the song and I played it 'til it broke.
